Cleveland’s Coastal Culture

Our morning took us through downtown Cleveland, with the city’s impressive architecture serving as our starting point as we prepared to trace the eastern curve of the Lake Erie shore. This segment was an immersion in Cleveland’s vibrant coastal culture.

We were greeted by iconic structures that celebrate American history and sports. We rolled past the futuristic glass pyramid of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a landmark that tells a unique American story. Just a stone’s throw away, we cycled near Huntington Bank Field, the massive home of the Cleveland Browns. We navigated the initial city streets alongside the bustling Cleveland Harbor, a key area of commerce that transitions perfectly into recreational spaces.

Sights and Signs on the Trail

Once we cleared the central business district, the massive blue expanse of Lake Erie became our companion. Our route was an ideal blend of roads and trails. We were treated to several magnificent look-outs over the water, where the wide blue horizon meets the shoreline, the waves, and the rocky breakwaters under an endless clear sky. A particularly nice stretch took us onto a dedicated coastal trail, running right alongside the water and providing a refreshing, up-close perspective. We also spent time on peaceful greenway trails, where deep tree canopies provided both welcome shade and a calm, focused pedaling experience that was a quiet contrast to the open lakeside.

Historic Western Reserve

The final part of our ride was a step back in time as we passed through the foundational towns of the historic Western Reserve. This area is characterized by its deep, preserved history and manicured town centers.

A major highlight was navigating through charming Madison, Ohio, where beautifully preserved white buildings date back to the earliest period of Northeast Ohio settlement. These structures added a rich depth to our adventure, as we reflected on the historic path we were following, including the designated route along the Western Reserve Greenway Trail.

Finally, after nearly 80 miles of incredible diversity—from stadiums and rock legends to quiet greenways—we completed our journey in Ashtabula. It was a day full of blessings, from the weather to the warm reception at our host location.
