Channeling the spirits of Lewis & Clark

It’s easy to see why riders on a Fuller Center for Housing Bicycle Adventure might catch the spirit of Lewis and Clark along their journey.
Ride the center’s GAP/C&O route and you’ll stop in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where the Corps of Discovery secured weapons and supplies from the National Guard armory.
Ride the Katy Trail and you’ll follow the explorers’ path from St. Charles, Missouri, along the Missouri River.
Set out on the Northern Tier and you’ll dip your rear bike tire in the Pacific Ocean next to the Lewis and Clark monument in Seaside, Oregon.
Today, on our 19th day of riding the Northern Tier, we pedaled from Glasgow to Poplar, Montana, riding a few miles north and parallel to the Missouri River where Lewis and Clark began encountering a challenging stretch of river and concerns about conflicts with the Lakota.
Our concerns on our adventure of discovery are more tame, centered on getting to the next rest stop or whether that friendly tailwind will turn into a hostile headwind. We made it through today’s 70 mile challenge under sunny skies with mild temperatures to a warm reception at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on the Fort Peck Reservation.
In the morning, we will carry the spirit of Lewis and Clark out of Montana and into North Dakota.
