Today was the big day we’ve all been talking about the last few days. We get to climb up over Monteagle mountain. It was a 2.9 mile climb with 1,141 feet of climbing. Avg grade was 8.1% with sections at 15-17%.
Week #4 felt like a glimpse into history—echoing the era of the Louisiana Purchase and the opening of the American West following the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Our bike rides carried us through landscapes once explored by pioneers, those who journeyed in search of opportunity and a fresh start.
We started our usual early routine, up by 5 a.m. The morning felt nice—mid-60s and calm—but we knew the heat was coming. By midmorning, it had climbed into the 80s and kept rising.
We received multiple warnings from folks in the church we stayed at last night, to be extra careful out on the road today, and thankfully nothing at all happened and we all came in safely to the rip roaring town of 581 people known as White River South Dakota.
We made it to July! We celebrated with a 97 mile ride and 3,463 feet of climb…. Unfortunately almost all of that climb was concentrated in a 10 mile stretch just after crossing the Missouri River.
We left Sioux Falls this morning after a relaxing day off yesterday. Traffic was light and the drivers courteous and with a smooth roadway we made good progress.
