East Coast Segment 4

Savannah, GA to Orlando, FL

img_5159astoria-finish-2014Spinning further southward still, Segment 4 places us into our 13th and final state: Florida! With plenty of sunshine and heat, it is guaranteed to be a toasty week, but with no shortage of interesting towns and great cycling!

Leaving Savannah, we will ride 70 miles south to Darien, GA. We will spend this day largely in rural small-town Georgia, taking in the beautiful inner coastal waters as we go. Darien itself is a small town of 1,900 on the mouth of the Altamaha River, making it a cozy place to rest for the night.

Our last stop in the Peach State is St. Mary’s, Just a few miles north of the Florida state line. This town boasts access to Cumberland Island, the largest of Georgia’s barrier islands. A ferry is available if this historic island is interesting to you!

Jacksonville Beach is the next stop on our journey. With plenty of local attractions including the Jacksonville Beach Pier, this stop is full of classic beach town fun.

The fourth day of Segment 4 leads us to Ormond Beach, FL. Just North of Daytona Beach, this 97 mile day will be rewarded with stunning views along the Halifax River.

We head slightly more inland from Ormond Beach to the land of Mickey Mouse himself, Orlando! While Disney may be a great attraction, it certainly gets beaten out by a chance to visit and work with the Central Florida Fuller Center for Housing on our second and final build day of the ride. If Mickey is a must-see on your list, the next day is an off day where you may frolic around Disney to your heart’s content, and rest up for our final week down the coast!
