(Always) Back for More

By Kert Emperado

I arrived in Portland yesterday and had a chance to reunite with 2014 riders, Nicole, Lindsey, and support intern, Kristina. And this was even before meeting with the official ride group. I am always reminded that the FCBA experience often builds lifelong relationships. We enjoyed reminiscing about our shared experiences biking and traveling throughout the country and catching up on our new life situations. Thank you to Nicole and Kristina for driving up to Portland, and for Lindsey for hosting us, and taking us to the nearby award-winning food trucks! I had a waffle sandwich called the Portlander, and it was very tasty.Continue reading

Back with the Family

The last four years I have been an all-the-way rider and the bike mechanic on the FCBA. So, this year, being a segment rider is a bit different for me. I didn’t start out with
this group in Astoria because I was on a different bike adventure when this ride started and besides I’ve ridden the sections from Billings, Montana to Astoria, Oregon and from
Waukegan, Illinois to Portland, Maine in previous years; so this year I simply decided to ride those portions that would be new to me and free up the remainder of the summer for other
things.Continue reading

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels, Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields. In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-oh-one. I don’t know where I’m riding now, I’m just riding on…” – Jackson Browne. (Ok, slightly modified at the end)
Monday,  June 4th.
We left the comfort of Chula Vista today and headed 49 miles east to the city of Campo, CA.  This is my first experience being part of the FCBA family, and I must say that I am very blessed to have been privileged to join them on their journey. Today was very special for me.  Normally in my regular cycling activities I am usually towards the front of the pack, rushing and racing to “get the best time.”  Today was not about that.  Today was an opportunity to serve while riding.

Butt Butter!

Written by: Peter Asmuth

Today, we woke up to a cold, rainy, windy Oregon coast day, which didn’t change all day.

Over the decades, cyclists have learned, mostly the hard way, that hours of riding on a narrow seat, with your legs moving your bottom back and forth, ever so slightly, can cause tender spots, which can lead to blisters in very bad places if not treated. Various products have been developed to ease the discomfort, and one of the most popular ones is a preventative cream aptly named ‘Butt Butter’. Why, it’s so popular that they’ve even developed a female version, ‘Butt Butter for Her’, and if you give a tube of it to your wife on valentine’s day, you’ll certainly contribute to widening the gulf between the sexes.
