A Note on Servanthood

By Courtney Fields

Today is our last riding day with Dave and Diane Maidts, and I’m thankful that I was able to experience two weeks with this awesome couple. Not only did they share their love story with me, but they showed me servant leadership. Diane is a veteran rider, and she has the best listening ear. If we’re having dinner with a church, she is the first person you’ll find chatting away with someone she just met like they were lifelong friends. And Dave, he may seem quiet, but he’s playful, insanely smart, and incredibly helpful. After a long day of supporting, Dave goes above and beyond by working until every single thing is unloaded into the church.

First Impressions

By Mark Murphy

This is my third summer ride and at the end I will have logged more than 10,000 miles with the Fuller Center.  Yet I continue to be amazed at the genuine compassion, caring, and I dare say love exhibited by all those involved (riders, support, churches, and general population as a whole). Before this years trip one of my riding buddies asked me how I dealt with “jerks” that I met on the trip.  While I will admit I have encountered some “unique” personalities on FCBA events I must say that people who came across as “jerks” in week one became much more human as the miles went by.  Maybe it was their protective layers were shed and they felt safer sharing who they truly were?  Maybe it was MY protective layers diminished and I was able to see who they truly were?

Day 1

By Ky Griffin

Enjoying the little things

Today has been a day of adventure, starting with breakfast burritos prepared by our team. When it was time to leave Bingen Baptist Church all  of the drains were backed-up. After diligent work by many the problem was mastered.Continue reading

Right Time. Right Place. Right Everything.

Written by: Crystal Anderson

There is that split second at 3am when I ask myself, “Why am I awake right now? What is going on?” Simultaneously, I realize that I need to make an early morning trip to the restroom (per usual) and that I’m shivering a bit because I may have made a poor choice of sleeping spot.

There is that follow up split second when I ask myself, “Did I really just drive nine and a quarter hours to sleep on a floor and to turn around and bike in frigid temperatures? Why didn’t I just find the closest volunteer build location and go build for a day? My work in the office and at home will pile up. And I have to break away from the ride early to get home to another commitment. Why do I have to always choose the most challenging path? Can I do this? Will I have the will to do this? What was I thinking?”

Report: Day 2

Written by: Scott Baker

Day 2 proved to be a shorter ride day. We spent the morning with the United Methodist Church. This very small church in Portsmouth NH had the most remarkable singing talent. A young woman had many in tears with her song of Christ. It was remarkable.
