First ride day of the 2023 Tour de Florida
Jan. 7, 2023

By Dan Hepp

Our day started with the FCBA ride orientation that gives everyone the opportunity to get to know more about the Fuller Center Bicycle Adventure and also to know each other better before riding.

It was sad to leave Michael, our host at Good Shepherd Church. He and his friends were very gracious hosts, meeting all of our needs for the two days. We had a good laugh together over the fact that he could be a Willie Nelson lookalike if he grew his hair long.

Florida did not disappoint us for today’s ride. The starting temperature was in the upper 50’s and reached the upper 60’s with a beautiful blue sky for today’s ride. We were blessed with the opportunity to ride the Capital Circle and St Marks rail trails both without a hill in sight.

The trails also gave me the opportunity to have several conversations with another rider as we were the sweeps for the day. Sweeps are the last two riders in the group whose job is to help anyone that might have a problem along the way.
